Arboriculture: Selection and Maintenance of Trees

This course is designed for the undergraduate students majoring or minoring in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, or landscape architecture or anyone who desires more technical information on the selection, siting, and care of individual trees in the landscape. Topics include: species selection, planting and transplanting, pruning, plant health care management, diagnosis of problems, risk management, and remedial treatments. Assigned readings from journals articles and professional publications. Classes are discussion/demonstration both in the classroom and at the Urban Forestry Outreach, Research and Extension Nursery on the St Paul Campus.

Course work: 

  • No exams- weekly online short quizzes
  • Lab exercises in working with tree and wood samples
  • Hands on exercises in pruning, planting at the Urban Forestry Outreach, Research and Extension Nursery
  • Project to design and create a web page on an arboricultural topic
  • Short writing and photography assigns through the semester
