Areas of Interest

My research and teaching interests center on hydrology and the management of watersheds with special interest in the hydrologic role of forests and wetlands. I have particular interest in improving our understanding of how land use and climate affect streamflow, flooding, and water quality from rural watersheds.  I seek to help students become knowledgeable and competent scientists, watershed managers, and good stewards of the land. My interests extend from the northern Lake States to other climatic regimes of North America and abroad.

Current Research:

  • Transpiration, interception and streamflow changes on watersheds undergoing forest harvesting & conversion from aspen to coniferous forests in northern Minnesota
  • Effects of woody and perennial herbaceous crops, including agroforestry practices, on water flow and water quality from agricultural watersheds of Minnesota
  • Stream channel response to land use change and climatic extremes
  • Hydrologic role of restored wetlands and riparian buffers
  • Modeling watershed response to wetland restoration and changing vegetative cover.
