U of M SAF Student Chapter members joined Minnesota’s Southern Chapter of SAF in October for a field trip of Willow Brook Municipal Forest to learn about managment options for hardwood forests, biomass production from buckthorn, emerald ash borer, and oak woodland restoration.

SAF Student Chapter at Willow Brook Municipal Forest

Forest Resources undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni connected at the Society of American Foresters National Convention in Madison, Wisconsin. At a plenary session, former faculty member Tony D’Amato gave a warm recognition of Alan Ek for his service and leadership in forestry across the Midwest. Other sessions focused on the history as well as the changing landscape of forestry, both physically and socially, as we seek to engage cultural differences in providing solutions to land management challenges. Some of the other highlights from the convention included an alumni reception for U of M graduates, speaker sessions, tradeshow, career fair, and on-site interviews for students. Over forty faculty, staff, students, friends, and alumni showed up for the U of M alumni reception which included Alan-Ek-themed trivia and other humorous questions.
